What is osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is a disease of the skeletal system characterized by a decrease in bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue with a consequent increase in fragility and susceptibility to fractures, among which the most frequent are the vertebral ones followed by fractures of the femur and upper limb. In the presence of osteoporosis, an imbalance is created between the amount of bone absorbed by the osteoclasts and that produced by the osteoblasts. The bone becomes fragile, porous and the risk of fractures increases even with minimal trauma.

The false myths of osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is an exclusively female condition
Fake. Osteoporosis can also affect men, although to a lesser extent than women. Women are in fact more prone to this disease also because of the menopause that leads to a rapid loss of bone substance.

Milk hurts
Far from being harmful to bones, milk is an excellent ally against osteoporosis because it guarantees a good intake of calcium and thus helps to keep bones healthy.

The role of sun and vitamin D
Vitamin D is very important for bone health. Exposure to the sun helps to promote the production of this substance in our bodies. However, sunlight alone may not be enough to provide the right amount of vitamin D, especially as exposure depends on many factors: the time of exposure, skin type and so on.
For this reason, people who are deficient in vitamin D and suffer from osteoporosis should always also resort to vitamin supplementation.

If you operate on a fracture of the femur, you will recover from osteoporosis
Again, this is a false belief. The fracture of the femur, in fact, is the consequence of osteoporosis, the tangible manifestation of the fragility of the bones that leads to fractures even for minimal traumas. Surgery therefore resolves the fracture, but does not act on its causes or even on the danger of new episodes.

Possible risk factors
Osteoporosis affects women more frequently, especially after menopause. Estrogen deficiency significantly affects the process of bone remodeling, i.e. the process by which old bone is replaced by new bone. Under normal conditions, the portion of new bone synthesized during remodeling is exactly the same as that removed. With menopause, on the other hand, there is a loss of 2-3 percent per year which leads to bone deterioration and fractures.
Other risk factors include smoking, alcohol, a sedentary lifestyle.

Symptoms and diagnosis of osteoporosis
The symptoms of osteoporosis are not clear to understand as this disease generally does not show great signs of itself until a fracture occurs. If there is a fracture together with other risk factors, the doctor may decide to investigate.
The diagnosis of osteoporosis is based on both instrumental and laboratory evaluations. Tests to determine bone mass are particularly important, especially in districts with the greatest risk of fracture.

Therapy
There's no cure for osteoporosis. However, something can be done not only to prevent it, but also to slow down or stop its progression.
In addition to pharmacological therapies, magnetotherapy is a useful, effective and natural ally.
Magnetic waves, in fact, on the one hand, stimulate the regeneration of fractures by accelerating recovery in the event of bone breakage, and on the other slow down the process of decreasing bone density triggered by osteoporosis.
